How to be a Courteous House Guest

Staying with family and friends while on the road is a great way to get a firsthand perspective on a new place and save a few extra bucks. But being a house guest can also put you in some potentially sticky situations. Follow these guidelines for a stress-free stay.

Set clear expectations. This goes for both you and your host — share your travel information with them. Let them know if you’re coming in on a red-eye flight or planning to sleep in every morning.

Include them in your plans. Even if you and your host have separate agendas, it’s only polite to give them an idea of your plans and daily routine.

Be neat. This almost goes without saying, but you’re living in someone else’s house so be extra tidy while you’re there. When you leave, strip the linens and put them in the washing machine or laundry basket.

Repay them. Offer to take care of simple chores and be helpful around the house. It’s also a good idea to treat your hosts to a meal — home cooked or out — or leave them with a gift as a sign of appreciation.

As with any arrangement, communication is key. Don’t forget to return the favor when they’re in your town.
