How to Eat Cheaply on the Road

Bifana sandwiches are simple yet tasty. The Portuguese treat includes seasoned, fried pork on a roll. Depending on where in Portugal you dine, the pork is or isn’t topped with a house-made sauce or plain yellow mustard. © Oleksandra Tsvid | Dreamstime.com

Tips / Travel

Carefully budgeting for a vacation usually requires some creativity for inexpensive lodging and transportation. But food costs can add a bundle to your vacation, from restaurants to water and snacks. Instead of skipping out on pricey restaurants altogether, creatively trim your budget by eating cheaply on the road without feeling hungry.

Load Up on Apps
Before you hit the road, scour apps that offer discounts or cash back in your pocket just for dining. Ibotta offers discounts and cash bonuses on everything from beer, wine, liquor, snacks and other items at both stores and some restaurants around the country. You can also put together a cheap dinner at your Airbnb or other accommodations by looking for Ibotta items with the most discounts.

Skimp on Beverages
Most restaurants offer free water with your meal if you just ask. Inquiring about free refills and drink specials can also result in deep savings on sodas and happy hour service. Remember to bring along your own water bottle to stock up whenever you find a water fountain or drinking station to stay hydrated on the cheap.

Extend Lunch
Lunches are notoriously cheaper at restaurants than dinner, often for the exact same items. Find out when area restaurants stop serving lunch and push back your midday meal as late as possible. You can also look for all-you-can-eat lunch buffets that put more value onto your plate.

Look for Freebies
There are always options for freebies around most cities, from gallery openings to festivals with complimentary samples. And hotels and vacation rentals will often stock up on free coffee, tea and sometimes even breakfast. Before you leave, remember to grab a few pieces of fruit and muffins to wrap up and take for a light midday meal on the road.

Dine with the Locals
Tourist destinations are notoriously overpriced with subpar restaurant options. Get out of the tourist tangle and venture a few blocks or miles off the beaten path. You’re more likely to find inexpensive finds, get a more authentic feel for the area and meet some locals along the way.

Remember to practice good food sense while you travel. Packing extra high-protein snacks and eating well when you’re at restaurants can help decrease your overall food budget. Make your meals about lean proteins and fresh fruits and vegetables to help you stay satiated on the road.

Known as Florida’s Forgotten Coast, this stretch of the Florida Panhandle is often overlooked for more well-known destinations in the state, such as Panama City Beach, Miami and Tampa. But the region’s quiet and laid-back atmosphere slowly draws travelers wishing to escape the crowds and high prices of Florida’s other cities, and one hospitality brand just announced plans to bring a 55-acre resort and community to the area.
