Last-minute packing and struggling to fit everything into a bulging suitcase is not the most stress-free way to prepare for a trip. Fortunately some people take the time to think about efficient ways of stuffing your things into small spaces, and a round-up of the Internet’s best offerings is found below.

First off, the most basic advice is to avoid over-packing. Plan your trip out day-by-day to ensure you have sufficient clothing, but remember it is better to pack less and do washing more often. That said, bear in mind the kind of environments and weather conditions you are likely to encounter, and make sure to pack appropriately. Try to leave some space for souvenirs instead of packing that extra pair of jeans.

Those headed to cheaper parts of the world may even save money by buying locally, and come home with some great souvenirs to boot. Another way to save space is to empty those bumper bottles of toiletries into packaging appropriate for the length of your trip; there is no need to take two months worth of shampoo on a three-day city break.

A long-standing debate is raging between advocates of folding clothes, and those who prefer to roll them. Without wishing to sit on the fence, there are benefits to both methods. Tightly roll wool and cotton items, but fold dressier clothes so they don’t get too wrinkled in transit.

Wear bulky items on your journey and put awkwardly shaped items in your carry-on luggage. In order to eek out every last cubic centimeter of space from your luggage, stuff your underwear into your shoes, or perhaps consider using some vacuum bags.
