How to Prepare for a Border Crossing

Tips / Travel

Crossing a border into another country, especially in one where you don’t understand the language, can be a daunting task. There are fees to pay, paperwork to be handed over and sometimes you have to deal with a border crossing agent’s less-than-pleasant attitude. It’s easy to become frustrated during the process, but it’ll go a lot smoother if you come prepared.

Know the Fees

Hopping the border into a new country usually isn’t free, at least not outside of Europe, so always make sure to have the correct amount on hand. In fact, some agents have been known to charge more than they’re supposed to to get through the gate, and there’s often nothing you can do about it. Check fees before you arrive online and make sure you have extra cash with you.

Bring Your Documents

You’ll definitely need your passport when trying to cross the border no matter where you’re going, but you’ll likely also need additional paperwork in some countries. That means visas and permission forms, as well as arrival cards and occasionally proof of onward travel back out of the country.

Don’t Argue

Be as pleasant as possible when crossing a border because agents have nothing preventing them from turning you around at whim. There’s no legal right to enter their country if they don’t want you to, so don’t get testy with them if a problem arises.

Learn Phrases

Learn the important phrases and greetings when crossing a border. It shows respect and makes the process easier if your border agent isn’t in the mood to try and communicate in English that day. Trust us, it happens.
