The Adirondacks of New York may be well-known for the destination’s outdoor adventures, but that doesn’t mean the region only offers peak bagging and kayaking on remote waterways. There’s no need to be an extreme adventurer to enjoy the North Country. In fact, there are several ways the region has made nature accessible to even the most indoors-y travelers.
Here’s where to go to see nature in the ADKs without straying too far from civilization or air conditioning.
In Tupper Lake, The Wild Center is an all-ages, all-seasons attraction combining art, nature and Adirondack culture. You could easily spend an entire afternoon exploring here, visiting the animals, taking to the (well-maintained, well-marked) nature trails and enjoying the accessible Wild Walk, a series of bridges leading you above the trees for stellar views of the mountains beyond.
The Adirondacks boasts some gorgeous waterfalls, but a lot of them require a bit of a hike. Drop the hike and head to High Falls Gorge if you don’t anticipate strapping on (or even owning) a pair of hiking boots. The roadside attraction offers safe, convenient access to a plummeting gorge and its powerful waterfalls, with no trekking gear required.
One thing hikers in the Adirondacks will always talk about is the views. The mountaintops offer vistas you can’t find anywhere else, any other way except for trekking — except, of course, when you just drive to the top of the mountain. There’s only one mountain in the region you can access via car, and that’s Whiteface Mountain. Luckily, it offers some of the most impressive views in the area.
