Boston might be well know for being a center of healthcare, education and technology, but it will never shed its legacy of being a city founded on the hard work of immigrants, many of whom came from Ireland. The Irish began arriving in Boston and nearby towns in the 17th century, but would later find refuge in the city in larger numbers during the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s. Some of Boston’s most legendary political and celebrity figures, including the Kennedys, Wahlbergs and Chris Evans are Irish, and it is only fitting St. Patrick’s Day festivities honor the city’s rich history.
Start your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with breakfast and a pint of Guinness at Solas Pub at the Lenox Hotel on Newbury Street. Want to stamp your foot along to the Dropkick Murphys? Buy tickets for one of the Boston band’s House of Blues concerts, running March 16–19 in the shadow of Fenway Park.
Sport your best green on March 20 and head to the South Boston (Southie, to locals) St. Patrick’s Day parade, a tradition since 1901, when it also marked the 125th anniversary of the British ending occupancy of the city. This year, the parade starts at 1 p.m. from the Broadway stop of the T or metro line and lasts about three hours.
