Pickpocketing is a growing problem around the world as tourism increases, with many people at least knowing someone who has been the victim in their travels. You can help keep your belongings safer by knowing what to look for when walking down the street.
Are they watching you?
Pickpockets don’t simply pick targets at random. They spend time looking for the person who’s least likely to notice they were just robbed. Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for folks who seem to be scanning the crowds or staring too long at you or another person and keep track of their position.
They Move Around A Lot
Pickpockets rarely stand still. They walk throughout the area scoping potential victims and monitoring their movements and habits. If you notice someone walking around the area but not leaving, especially seeming to hover around you or another person, that’s likely someone about to make a grab.
They’re Really Friendly
Pickpockets aren’t always trying to avoid your gaze. Sometimes they get right up in your face to distract you while their friend does the deed. If a random stranger approaches you on the street to ask a question, be on guard, they might be trying to pull one over on you.
They Look Normal
This one isn’t exactly a great help, but often travelers make the mistake of thinking pickpockets will stand out by looking shady and dressing in an obviously trashy way. Not so. Many of them will look like regular folks in clean clothes, or might even be dressed like a tourist.
