Safety

Big cities that are known for attracting hordes of tourists are also know for attracting petty thieves. Even the safest cities in the world can have a high crime rate solely because of their pickpocket incidents. Although mostly considered nonviolent, there’s still a risk of losing your valuables without even knowing it. Follow these tips to protect your belongings and yourself.

Wear an over-the-shoulder bag instead of a backpack. This ensures your valuables are within your eyesight and within your reach. When walking through heavy crowds, swing your bag so it rests in front of you. This gives potential robbers the signal you are aware of your belongings and you’re in defense mode.

Avoid tourist traps and overcrowded attractions. The plaza in front of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and La Rambla in Barcelona may be sites on your bucket list, but it’s best to skip these sites or save them for early-morning visits when crowds are sparse. Use the opportunity to see less visited but just as mesmerizing places of interest.

Keep walking. Street vendors selling knick-knacks may seem friendly and helpful, but they tend to work in pairs. While one is charming you with merchandise, the other is slipping your wallet out of your pocket as slyly as a fox. When these pushy salesmen approach, shake your head and say no, or just ignore them and keep walking.
