Keeping a tight watch on your wallet while traveling is always a good idea, as pickpocketing can be a problem in certain places. However, many of them have been at this for a while and know where you’re stuffing your bills. Here are a few places you should probably think twice about stashing your cash.
Your Glove Box
Many people make the false assumption that if a thief can’t see your wallet, they’ll think it’s not there. That’s just not true. Next time you decide you want to leave your wallet in the car, don’t stuff it in the glove box. That’s one of the first places a thief will look.
Your Suitcase
Assuming your money is safe in your suitcase is a huge mistake. Not only will a thief have no issue rifling through your things, the suitcase is also one of the likeliest candidates for hidden objects. All the zippers and compartments aren’t fooling anyone, and you’ll likely be left penniless if you decide to stuff your cash in there.
Your Pocket
There’s a reason the term is called “pickpocketing.” Thieves naturally assume your pants pocket is where you’ll hold your wallet — that’s kind of what they’re designed for after all. Instead, invest in a good fanny pack (yes, it does look silly) that you can keep in front of you in your line of sight at all times. Better to look a little silly than be broke.
Your Shoe/Sock
Stuffing a little cash sounds good in theory — who’s going to tear your shoe off in public to grab a few bucks, but it falls apart in practice. Not only can it be incredibly uncomfortable, it’s also possible you’ll forget you put your money in there when you take it off. Even worse, if you’re the type to literally kick your shoes off at night your money might fall out and end up under the bed out of sight.
