Riding the subway is often a necessity when visiting a foreign city (or even one in your own country), so it’s important to take precautions when you hop onboard.
Don’t Ride At Night
The early evening hours are fine, but getting on the subway at 2 a.m. isn’t a great idea no matter where you go. It’s the best time for thieves or other vagrants to steal or do harm. If you must, try and get on the most crowded carriage or the one next to the driver (if there is one).
Have a Friend
Don’t ride the subway alone if you don’t have to. Always have a friend along or make friends with another passenger who looks friendly, especially the closer you get to midnight.
Hide Your Belongings
If you’re a guy, don’t leave your wallet in your back pocket. If you’re a woman, try not to have your purse on you while you ride (you probably shouldn’t be walking around with that while traveling anyway).
Avoid Shady Characters
Do not hop on a train filled with people who look like they might mug you. If they’ve got tattoos of teardrops under their eyes, that’s probably a good sign to wait and catch the next one.
Avoid Eye Contact
Anyone who’s been to New York City knows not to make eye contact on the subway. Most people don’t want to be bothered, so just mind your business until it’s time to get off.
