To all the camping newbies out there, don’t be intimidated. It is possible to take and love your first camping trip.
Planning is essential to make sure your trip goes smoothly. Research your intended campsite and take a physical map with you — don’t expect cell service — and knowing what kind of terrain you’re getting yourself into is also helpful for packing and planning.
Unlike other vacations, camping requires a bit more thoughtful packing — there are no convenience stores in the woods. While it is never a good idea to over-pack, throwing an extra sweater in your bag certainly won’t weigh you down too much. Basics, such as a tent, sleeping bag, sunscreen, flashlight and multi-tool, should always be a priority.
Make sure to secure your food in bear-safe containers (depending on the campground) and follow all posted regulations about when and where campfires are permitted. While these rules may seem tiresome, they are there for a reason and the last thing you want to encounter is a bear eating your lunch.
The easiest way to ease first-time camping stress is to go with friends, preferably friends who have more outdoor experience than you. Not only will you have someone to spend time with, but you’ll have an extra hand for tent-pitching and trail finding.
Enjoy the experience, roast marshmallows and tell ghost stories. Just don’t get eaten by a bear!
