Tips / Destination

Of the countries of the Caribbean, Haiti is surely one of the least visited.

Years of political unrest and a series of natural disasters left the country in chaos, with some even claiming it suffers from a curse. However, if you are up for an adventure, there is plenty to see and do in Haiti.

To get a taste for the culture, spend some time in the capital of Port-au-Prince. Try to connect with a trusted Haitian online before you travel. The bustling city can be overwhelming, but with a local guide everything will make more sense. Some U.S. cities, such as Miami, have a large Haitian population.

Stay away from the neighborhoods of Carrefour, Cite Soleil, Martissant and Bel Air, which are subject to official travel warnings due to high rates of crime. If you want to engage in independent travel, it is best to go with a friend or consider signing up to an organized tour from the likes of G Adventures or Wild Frontiers Travel.

There are flights to Port-au-Prince from Atlanta, Miami and New York. It is best to avoid traveling during hurricane season, June to November.

Other notable dates to avoid include the elections Oct. 9, and a potential second round on Jan. 8, 2017.

Despite some lingering uncertainty, tourists are returning to Haiti. There is no reason why you shouldn’t go and see this fascinating country.
