Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

The citizens of Haiti refer to themselves as 80 percent Roman Catholic, but 100 percent voodoo. Visiting the island nation without immersing yourself in voodoo traditions, or vodun, is almost sacrilegious. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Be Respectful

There are tons of opportunities to tour voodoo rituals in Haiti, but no matter where you go be sure to remain respectful. Do not poke fun at their beliefs or try to convert them to your religion.

Buy Something

Whether you believe in voodoo traditions or not, there’s no harm in supporting the local economy. If a witch doctor offers you medicine, go ahead and hand over a few bucks; it doesn’t mean you have to use it!

Visit a Witch Doctor

You’ll definitely want to pop in on a respected witch doctor and have them give you a once over. You’ll get a reading on your health and possibly your future. We can’t vouch for accuracy, but it’ll definitely be fun.

Take Part

Most locals will be happy to have you join in their rituals. You’ll notice a lot of drum banging and all-out joy and if you’re unsure of what to do just ask. They’ll show you the ropes.
