The wisdom used to be Iceland was a summer destination, but that thinking is changing.
Whereas many people headed to the island in the summer months when the sun never set, an increasing number now visit during the winter. The days are far shorter and the weather is colder, but that brings its own advantages.
Fewer daylight hours mean there is more opportunity to spot the Northern Lights, the famous phenomenon that appears on bucket lists the world over. It also means flights and accommodations are slightly cheaper, although the gap is closing as locals realize there is no longer a real low season for tourist demand.
Given there are fewer hours of daylight, you’ll have to plan your outdoor activities wisely. Luckily, top attractions, such as the Golden Circle tour, can be completed in around six hours, and other top spots, such as the geothermal pools that dot the country, are open long into the night.
The snowy winter weather also lends the countryside an ethereal glow, adding to Iceland’s reputation as a magical destination. Don’t be put off by winter!
That said you will need to travel prepared with plenty of warm clothes. Temperatures tend to hover around 0 degrees Celsius; cold for someone from Florida, but not too bad if you’ve spent years living through New York winters.
If you’re worried about getting around Iceland in winter, don’t be. Hire cars will be fitted with snow tires, and major routes are well maintained. You’ll only need a 4WD if you plan on venturing off into the wilds, so hire a cheap car and get out exploring!
