Top 5 / Europe

Iceland is a magical destination that draws visitors thanks to a wide variety of natural attractions, but it’s the waterfalls that are among the most spectacular sites to see. Here are five of the best to visit on your next trip to the country.

Gullfoss

As part of the renowned Golden Circle tour, Gullfoss may be the most visited waterfall in Iceland, but don’t let that put you off. These spectacular falls cascade over the width of the entire valley in a spectacular double drop.

Hraunfossar

While Gullfoss exhibits the awesome power of nature, Hraunfossar shows off its artful side. A series of rivulets tumble into the glacier river Hvita from a set of forested cliffs, making for an amazing photo opportunity.

Svartifoss

This thin stream of water tumbles 25 meters to the valley floor below, contrasting with the dark basalt rock. The column formations are reminiscent of the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik.

Skogafoss

At 25 meters high and 60 meters wide, Skogafoss is truly spectacular. Situated in the south of Iceland, it’s so accessible visitors can walk right up to its base.

Seljalandsfoss

Another one for photographers, Seljalandfoss is memorable for its 63-meter drop and the fact you can walk behind the falls themselves. It is easily accessible from the major Route 1 road in the south of the country.
