The Emerald Isle is known worldwide for two liquid vices: whiskey and beer. The Irish love the latter so much a Dublin museum opened an exhibit paying homage to the cherished venue where millions of locals and visitors come to take part in Ireland’s most popular pastime.
This summer, “A Little History of the Dublin Pub” opened to visitors at The Little Museum of Dublin, nestled on the northern border of St. Stephen’s Green. Museum attendees can learn how pubs (originally called public houses) came to be places of community in Dublin and throughout Ireland. Through vintage photographs and artifacts, museum-goers will be taken back in time to the beginning, when pubs began in the front parlors of peoples’ homes, and learn how they evolved to become a place of both a public and private nature.
The exhibit also explains the history of happy hour, originally titled “Holy Hour” as a post-church activity.
The limited-time exhibit, which simultaneously celebrates the 200th birthday of the Licensed Vintners Association, is only open until Sept. 24. Ticket prices vary from $9 for students and seniors to $11.50 for general admission. All tickets include the museum’s popular guided tour of the facility and exhibits, and advanced reservations are recommended.
