Perched atop the Big Mountain ski area in Whitefish, Mont., Kandahar Lodge is a great place to unwind in any season. In summer, a bright, floral landscape envelops the rustic lodge; in winter, a fireplace roars to help you shake off the chill after a day on the ski slopes. And year-round, an inviting bar and one of the best restaurants in the region beckon even if you’re not overnighting here.
If you are sleeping here, expect thematically rustic accommodations that are inviting and comfortable, if not perhaps needing a bit of an update. Still, this is a minor complaint for what will inevitably be a comfortable, relaxing stay.
You’ll want to spend time soaking in the large outdoor hot tub, part of a wellness center that includes a steam room, exercise room and massage treatment room. The hot tub seemed to get surprisingly little use, but proved to be the perfect antidote to a busy day exploring Whitefish and Glacier National Park.
The highlight of the lodge is Café Kandahar, where James Beard Award nominee Andy Blanton stands at the helm, delivering a stunning menu of local, seasonal food that is sure to be the highlight of your trip.
