Sitting on a pedestrianized street in the Vieux Port district of France’s second-biggest city, Les Arcenaulx is a true delight.
In warm weather, grab a table on the expansive outdoor terrace to enjoy the Provencal sunshine with a glass of local rosé. If it’s too cold — which isn’t too often on the Mediterranean coast — head inside to eat among the huge collection of books sold at this restaurant, library and bookshop.
The best time to go is at lunch, when the great value set menu kicks in. You’ll get great quality food — that normally sells for around $25 per plate — for around the same price for three courses. It really is a steal, and it makes paying $25 for a bottle of wine incredibly tempting.
We ate the cold mushroom soup, a lot tastier than it sounds, followed by a fillet of local seabass served with chorizo mash. For dessert, there was an incredible chocolate brownie cup that topped off the meal perfectly.
Les Arcenaulx is surrounded by other restaurants and visitors to the area are definitely not short of options on where to eat. However, this place comes highly recommended and is well worth seeking out next time you are in Marseille.
