Trends / LGBTQIA+

The residents of Birmingham have become more proactive in recent years in terms of fighting for LGBTQ rights, but the city still lies in the heart of the Deep South, so calling it friendly toward members of the community might be a stretch. However, there is a good deal of things to see and do here that make it worth a visit.

Like most large cities, Birmingham hosts a Pride parade every summer along with a gay and lesbian film fest that locals enjoy. It comes up short in the nightlife department compared to other cities of comparable size, but Jazzi’s on 3rd is a wonderful bar to check out on a Friday evening if you’re into great local music. Al’s On Seventh, Our Place and Spike’s Leather Club are also good options.

Bellini’s Ristorante and Bar operates as a popular meeting place for the community and serves some delicious Italian food. When you’re wining or dining around town, Birmingham has plenty of rich, traditional Southern culture to explore.

Overall, the city is as welcoming as you might expect from a Deep South city, but there’s no reason you should feel uncomfortable while visiting here. Enjoy the beautiful architecture and great comfort food with your partner or friends.
