According to the National Census Bureau, Bisbee is the most gay-friendly spot in the state of Arizona. This tiny little town is a liberal hamlet is a majority-conservative state, and offers an eclectic array of activities for anyone interested in the region’s mining history.
Brisbee has long been a beacon for artistic types, hipster, free spirits and members of the LGBTQ+ community. It boasts more gay couples living together than any other place in Arizona and at just more than 90 miles away from Tucson it’s the perfect spot for a quick daytrip. The town doesn’t have a ton of gay-specific establishments, but it does boast its own Gay Pride Festival every June.
The Queen Mine Tour is the town’s biggest attraction and a great way to explore the region’s mining history, and snag a few souvenirs along the way. Downtown you’ll find streets lined with art galleries, cafés and terrific shopping opportunities. The boarding houses for miners have been converted into bed and breakfasts, and the Victorian houses dotting the hillsides make for a great view. The Inn at Castle Rock is a gay-friendly establishment and offers quaint accommodations at a great price. You’ll also want to stop by St. Elmo Bar while in town, one of the top supporters of the yearly Pride events.
Bisbee might not offer all of the glitz and glamour of a large city, but it has an undeniable charm that makes it a worthwhile stop whenever you’re in southern Arizona.
