Maine Restaurant Week

By Jack Guy

In early March, the culinary scene of Maine gears up for a special series of events designed to show off its breadth and variety.

Maine Restaurant Week returns for its eighth edition March 1–12, with chefs from across the state competing in a number of events. In years past, the event started with a Breakfast Cook-Off, in which restaurants present their best breakfasts for the public to vote.

Other events include food-and-cocktail pairing and coffee-and-dessert pairing competitions, with money raised from the ticket price benefiting local causes. In addition to organized events, Maine Restaurant Week sees different fixed-price menus on offer. Participating restaurants serve menus at $25, $35, $45 and $55, giving you the chance to sample some of the best cuisine in the state at different price points.

The northeastern U.S. state of Maine has a rich culinary tradition, which includes the only “official state treat” in the whole country. You can’t come to Maine without trying a Whoopie Pie, while the long coastline means seafood, and especially lobster, is a favorite with locals.

Most of the action is centered around the city of Portland, but restaurants from a wider area are involved. Portland is just less than a two-hour drive from Boston, so you can easily build restaurant week into a longer trip along the East Coast.

You can find more information on the event website, or download the Maine Restaurant Week iPhone app.
