Trends / History

Before you go to Belize you might imagine the country is all about white-sand beaches and amazing coral reefs.

However, there are plenty of manmade wonders in the small Central American country to boot, namely the ruins left by the ancient Maya. Dotted around the nation lies evidence of the civilization that ruled over large swathes of the continent until breaking down 600–900 AD.

There are well-excavated ruins at Caracol, Xunantunich, Lamanai, Nim Li Punit and Altun Ha, as well as other cities still obscured by the jungle. The best sites to visit include Altun Ha, Xunantunich and Caracol.

Xunantunich is found close to the town of San Ignacio. To get here you’ll have to cross the Mopan River on a ferry before climbing a limestone ridge, which makes for an atmospheric approach to the pyramids and other structures.

Caracol is the largest Mayan city to be excavated in Belize. Climb the pyramids to look out over the Chiquibul forest reserve, which surrounds the site. You can also explore the area to swim in waterfalls and the nearby river.

Altun Ha is found just 31 miles north of Belize City, and around 10 miles from the Caribbean coast. If the largest pyramid here looks familiar, it’s because a drawing of it is used as the logo for Belikin beer.
