Professional boxing world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired with an undefeated boxing record of 49-0. Currently 40 years old, Mayweather stated the only way he would come out of retirement would be to fight Conor McGregor, the current UFC Lightweight Champion. At 29 years old, McGregor has a mixed martial arts record of 21-3.
The boxing match, held Aug. 26, meant McGregor had to fight with a different style because he trained as a mixed martial artist, not a boxer. Originally, Dana White, president, UFC, stated such a fight had little chance of happening. However, he did not dismiss the idea and said Mayweather would have to call him first because McGregor has a contract with the UFC. Reports surfaced in January that negotiations to arrange a match began. After much anticipation, McGregor signed the contract to fight Mayweather in May. A noteworthy international press tour took place from July 11–14.
“The Money Fight” between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor took place in Paradise, Nev., at the T-Mobile Arena. Showtime Pay-Per-View cost $89.95 with an additional $10 charge for HD. Both fighters signed nondisclosure agreements in regard to the fight’s compensation. However, Mayweather likely earned at least $100 million and McGregor at least $75 million.
