Mountain Shadows Resort

Reviews / Hotel

The Mid-Century chic Mountain Shadows Resort is sandwiched between two dramatic fists of mountains in Paradise Valley, Ariz., near Scottsdale. The brand-new hotel opened earlier this year on the site of a former hotel of the same name that was a popular retreat for Hollywood stars in the 60s and 70s. Though it’s entirely rebuilt today, it’s easy to picture movie stars and jetsetters lounging by the pool or sipping a cocktail in the shadow of the dramatic red rocks of Camelback Mountain.

There’s much to note around this expansive property, from its grand lobby with views of a perfectly manicured, central, cactus-studded courtyard and the surrounding mountains to the large guestrooms, which range in size from 1,000 to 3,000 square feet.

Each of the 183 guestrooms promises mountain views, with thoughtful touches like vintage art, Mid-Century Modern furnishings and freestanding tubs that look out onto views just beyond the balcony. Massive, glass-enclosed showers float at the rooms’ center, so you’re never far from the sights.

Outside of the rooms, Mountain Shadows boasts a Forrest Richardson-designed short course; an excellent, forward-thinking restaurant specializing in stone oven-roasted fare in Hearth ’61; and welcoming gathering spaces outfitted with fireplaces and beautiful furniture. If that wasn’t enough, there are also an expertly-curated art gallery space and two 75-foot pools.
