Tips / Destination

Icelanders are famous for partying, and there is nowhere better to find out why than the capital city of Reykjavik.

Unfortunately, for budget travelers, there is no getting away from the fact drinking in Iceland is expensive. To cut costs, try picking up a bottle of spirits to drink before you go out.

Another option is to follow the signs for happy hour. The majority of the bars in Reykjavik put on special offers for happy hour, which lasts multiple hours in some places. Fortunately, they don’t all coincide with each other, so you can’t follow the deals from one bar to the next.

Famous happy hours are held at Glaumbar, Dillon and . You can also check out the latest information on nightlife in Reykjavik at Grapevine.is, which is a kind of TimeOut for locals.

Grapevine is useful for finding out about concerts and other events, although those in search of live music would do well to check out Kaffibarinn and Kex Hostel. The latter is a great place for meeting fellow travelers, as well as locals who are up for a good time.

The best places for dancing are Hurra and Bar 11, which is sometimes open until 6 a.m. There are relatively few clubs in Reykjavik because all the venues are open pretty late.

If you just want to wander and see where the night takes you, head to Laugavegur and the surrounding streets. You’ll be spoiled for choice, with some of the most famous names of the Reykjavik bar scene all within easy reach.

Reykjavik is a great night out. Keep your eye on your spending if you’re on a budget, or cut loose at some of the swankier cocktail bars if you’re celebrating.
