Oktoberfest is the world’s greatest Volksfest, a beer-frenzied, traveling, fun fair. Originating in Munich, Germany, this 16-day festival runs from late September into October. More than 6 million people attend this debauchery-fueled affair annually, and with good reason. What’s not to love? Great beer. Festivities. Pretzels. Sauerkraut. Bratwurst. It’s a damned beautiful thing. And with millions of Americans claiming German ancestry, it’s no wonder many Americans join in on this wonderful festival. After Germany, the States can probably lay claim to the biggest Oktoberfest celebration on the planet.

Alpine Village Oktoberfest in Torrance, Calif., has a great festival lined up each year. It is said to be the oldest of its kind in Southern California. More than 100 craft beers are showcased, alongside around 40 individual breweries on tap. Of course, you’ll find schnitzels, bratwurst and pretzels to be had as well.

Oktoberfest Frederiksburg in Texas, has been going since 1981, drawing visitors to downtown Marktplatz for some authentic German cuisine and beer. There are plenty of activities, such as chicken dancing, polkas and waltzes to keep your spirits high as well.

But best of all has to be Pennsylvania’s Reading Liederkranz Oktoberfest, demonstrating some of the best food you’re likely to get in the States, situated in picturesque beer gardens and halls. Get up on the table and do a waltz with a glass of your favorite Hefenweizen and let it all out, German style.
