Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Mark your calendars for Oct. 3–4 for the can’t-miss World Championship Outhouse Races, which is sure to be an experience unlike any other. The historic mining town of Virginia City, Nev., plays host to the unusual event, born from a fateful day in history when the use of outdoor toilets was banned and angry town residents pulled their outhouses to the town hall in protest.

Teams of costumed outhouse races compete against each other to rush down C Street, the town’s main road. One rider sits on the throne, while the other two team members race to the toilet paper finish line. Past team names, such as The Pot Rod, The Classic Crapper and The Urinator, have induced further laughter.

The Parade of Outhouses begins 12 p.m. Oct. 3, with the races immediately following. More racing continues Oct. 4 before the championship team is crowned that afternoon.

The double-elimination tournament is open to three-person teams 18 and older; teams need to provide a functioning outhouse to race. Cash and prizes complement the world champion bragging rights that come with a win. Online registration is open through Oct. 2.
