Paris’s historic stock exchange building, the Bourse de Commerce, will soon see new life as a modern art museum. The project will transform one of the city’s most stunning architectural gems in the Neo-Classical building dating from 1763.
The circular, domed building had many iterations: It was first used as a corn store, and then as an exchange starting in 1854. In the 1980s, it became offices when the exchange moved. The new plan is to house the art collection of billionaire François Pinault
Pinault is the owner of famous fashion brands like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, as well as a massive €1.25 billion art collection. He’s housed some of the pieces in Venice’s Palazzo Grassi but has long held the goal of opening a Parisian museum.
The city leased the building to Pinault for a minimum 50 years.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, at a press conference announcing the new museum, said she has high hopes that the museum will fit into the city’s reputation as a cultural hub. “Paris has always been a city of creation, where for centuries creators come from all over the world to meet and exchange,” she said.
The museum is expected to open in 2019. No details have yet been released regarding which pieces will be shown.
