Tips / Travel

If you thought locks were just for your middle school gym locker, you haven’t seen the many new developments in luggage lock technology. Choose from cable locks, combination locks, key locks and mesh locks for the best way to secure your belongings.

It almost goes without saying you need to choose a TSA-safe lock for your checked bag. Yes, TSA locks are more expensive, but, in the event security decides to screen your luggage, you won’t be left with a clipped lock and mangled zipper. Most TSA locks use either keys or combinations. Key locks may be easier to pick and are usually faster to open. Choose a combination lock if speed isn’t an issue and remember to store your code somewhere safe.

Cable locks are the next-level lock for the serious traveler. These locks allow you to secure multiple bags together or lock bags to stationary objects such as bedframes. Much like cable bike locks, these locks are a larger but more versatile option.

Finally, serious backpackers can invest PacSafe locks that lock your entire backpack with exomesh and allow you to secure the entire thing to a stable object (like a tree). These locks are a bit heavy and can attract attention.

Whichever lock you choose, remember the best way to prevent luggage theft is vigilance, not an expensive lock.
