The brunch trend swept across Catalonia’s capital city, from Brunch & Cake in Eixample to bottomless mimosas on terraces in Raval. In the trendy neighborhood of El Born, Picnic Restaurant rests on a peninsula of sidewalk between the ancient alleys of the barrio and the expansive Parc de la Ciutadella. With roads running on either side of the bow of the concrete island, Picnic is hard to miss for both traffic and passersby.

Run by a couple (a man from Chile and a woman from California), Picnic prides itself on being a “mom and pop shop,” inviting guests into the cozy environment as if it were their own home.

When the weather warms up (or even when it doesn’t), patrons clamor quietly for one of the few outdoor tables where they can cure hangovers with coffee, freshly pressed juices and greasy but healthy dishes like duck confit with roasted potatoes topped with a poached egg, or huevos rancheros with a side of guacamole and shrimp.

Inside the corner-store restaurant is a central maze of high-top tables and a perimeter of lower four-seater tables lining the windows. The intimate space also can be rented out for private events, and even offers a catering service in private homes for weddings or special events.
