Greece has drawn plenty of media attention for its economic struggles, but the country — and its vibrant capital city — are still well worth visiting. And lucky you, you’ll be getting a steal of a deal with low prices, all while helping an economy heavily dependent on tourists.
Your trip will likely include plenty of visits to historic sites, including the famous Acropolis hill with the ruins of the Parthenon currently undergoing reconstruction. While some of the ruins are covered in construction materials, it’s fascinating to watch crews work to restore the temple.
And it’s worth visiting the affiliated Acropolis Museum, a short walk away, with its massive collection of statues, art and artifacts from ancient times. The National Archaeological Museum is also worth a few hours’ visit.
Stroll through the nearby neighborhood of Plaka, a thriving shopping district that’s a great place to visit for souvenirs and great food. Much of the district features pedestrian-friendly streets, and shops tend to stay open past nightfall for a before-dinner browse.
Consider taking a daytrip to visit the famous Delphi, site of the future-seeing Oracle, just a couple hours’ drive outside of the city.
