Destination

The dramatic island of Patmos, sitting in the Aegean Sea, draws visitors for its historic sites and scenery. Gleaming white homes cling to rocky hillsides, and the sunset over the Aegean is simply stunning.

Among the highlights for a trip to Patmos are a visit to St. John’s Monastery, which dates to 1088 and is still in use by Greek Orthodox monks. The monastery sits at the top of a hill overlooking the island; to get here, you’ll wind through picturesque alleys where shopkeepers sell souvenirs, clothing and art.

The monastery welcomes visitors, and you can explore the Byzantine Church of St. John, with its wood-carved icon screen, frescoes and mosaics. There’s also a museum on site with a slew of important religious manuscripts, medieval textiles, vestments and more.

The Grotto of the Apocalypse is another highlight; it is here Christians believe God dictated the Book of Revelations to St. John the Evangelist.

If religious sites aren’t your thing, consider exploring other aspects of the island, which was named a World Heritage Monument by UNESCO. From the port of Scala, head to the center of the island, Chora, where you can photograph the historic windmills and explore the landscape of rocky hills, barren soil and windswept promontories. Back in Scala, a number of shops and cafes will cap off your visit with souvenirs or a sip of Greek coffee or wine.
