May provides a lot of opportunities to celebrate. Between Cinco de Mayo, the Kentucky Derby and Memorial Day, there is no shortage of chances to kick back and relax with good food and drinks. But this year is special because there is a once-in-a-lifetime event happening. On May 19, an American will marry an heir to the British throne. The Royal Wedding has finally arrived.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle thought of everything, too. They even made sure the happy event takes place on a Saturday. Throwing a royal wedding party will require a couple of decisions, the first one being: Are you going traditional or modern? If you want to go traditional, set your alarm for 5 a.m. and make some scones. Invite your friends over and have them wear their favorite fascinators. The wedding will start at 6 a,m. EST, so prepare an early morning brunch with some English breakfast tea, strawberries and cream and your best English breakfast or just crumpets.
The other option is to delay the excitement until the evening by DVRing the wedding and changing the game. Fry up some fish and chips or bake a shepherd’s pie and bring out the full bar. There are so many ways to complement an evening party. Have a cake-baking contest to see who can make the best creation inspired by the happy couple, or make a British Monarchy drinking game happen with one, or several, appropriately themed Sporcle Quizzes as your guide. If you want to take it to the limit, you can even throw in the Suits wedding episode as a warm-up.
