The process of finding information about campsites used to be thoroughly frustrating, unless your idea of a good time involves searching for and browsing through clunky individual websites which appear not to have been updated since the turn of the millennium.
Hipcamp aims to change all of that by acting as a comprehensive search platform for camping grounds, which enables users to search by facilities (running water, electricity), nearby attractions (rivers, oceans, lakes) and activities (surfing, rock climbing, cycling).
Originally, the site only featured campsites in California, but Hipcamp is expanding, with Texas added recently and Oregon next on the list.
The site aims to get more people camping by improving their knowledge of campsites and making the idea of heading off into the wilderness a little less daunting. Users can search using the aforementioned criteria or using an enhanced version of Google Maps, which shows a pin for each campsite. Clicking on the pin reveals contact information, tips from previous visitors and other helpful information, assisting users in planning their camping trip. Whether you want to know what activities you can partake in near the site, or where the best spots to catch the sunrise are, Hipcamp can help you.
Although it is currently not possible to book a camping spot directly through the Hipcamp website, the company is campaigning to state authorities to change that. As it stands, Hipcamp is a valuable resource for anyone planning a camping trip, as well as encouraging more people to do so, but it may become an even more powerful tool in the future.
