Ever look at all the spring blooms and think of planting your own? If you have the space for it, why not? Planting a garden can be a fun and rewarding experience, a great pastime to last you through the summer (and after) and a fruitful experience when growing your own vegetables or herbs to use in the kitchen. Check out some of these tips to start your own garden this spring.
Soil
After a long winter, the soil will likely be dried out and packed. To bring it back to life you’ll need to add some moisture using compost, manure or fertilizer. As you do this, make sure to trim old plants and rip out any dead roots, plants and weeds to make room for your new harvest.
Plants
You’ll want some easy-to-grow spring plants to start off your new space. Some of these plants include tulips, lilacs and pansies. If you’re looking for some vegetables, lettuce, peas and arugula are great starter plants for the spring.
Upkeep
Once your garden is started you’ll want to do some maintenance and upkeep to keep things running smoothly. Come mid-spring you’ll want to consider new flowerbeds, plant some annuals and mulch a bit. In late spring you’ll want to deadhead and remove bulbs and prune flowering shrubs.
