Tips / Travel

Sometimes, the smallest act of kindness can be misinterpreted as rudeness in a foreign country, or something that seems ordinary in the United States is a major faux pas elsewhere in the world. Being a smart traveler is essential, and practicing a few basic etiquette tips will go a long way in improving your travel credibility.

Jacqueline Whitmore, etiquette expert, author, speaker and founder of The Protocol School of Palm Beach, offers some suggestions.

Do your Homework

Learn as much as you can about the culture you are visiting.

When in Doubt, Ask

If you are unsure how to behave in a particular situation, ask or watch your hosts and follow their lead.

Keep an Open Mind

Each culture has their own way of doing things. Be open to learning those ways, and never assume your way is the best way, or you will likely cause animosity.

When in Rome…

… do as the Romans so, as the saying goes. Adopt the habits of the culture you are visiting while you travel. Try the food, dress appropriately and don’t purposely offend.

Learn Words or Phrases

Learning a few basics in another language imply interest. Start with hello, thank you and goodbye.

Be Patient

Travel mishaps happen. Go with the flow.

Peace of Mind Walking Your Dog with Sniffspot

If you don’t have a fenced yard and it’s difficult for you to get out of the house to walk or run with Fido, then you know just how difficult it can be to get all that canine energy out, but not taken out on your couch or cabinets. If your dog isn’t the best around other dogs or people, your problems are even more difficult to overcome.

United Continues Its Global Expansion

United Airlines keeps soaring to new heights, recently announcing another expansion of its leading global route network. The airline added new non-stop flights between Newark (EWR) and Marrakesh (RAK), Morocco; Tokyo (NRT) and Cebu (CEB), Philippines; and Houston (IAH) and Medellin (MDE), Colombia. That’s not all: United also plans to increase flights to popular worldwide destinations including Hong Kong (HKG); Seoul (INC), South Korea; and Porto (OPO), Portugal. Following the recent agreement to increase flights between the U.S. and Chinese governments, the airline now adds four weekly flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Shanghai (PVG).

Interior Upgrades Begin Rolling Out Across United Fleet

United Airlines is in the midst of a major initiative to modernize its fleet over the next several years. After first announcing the plan in 2021, planes fitted with United’s signature interior are finally beginning to appear across the airline’s narrowbody fleet of Boeing and Airbus planes.
