Festival organizers announced Lady Gaga will replace Beyoncé for two Saturday shows, and added several punk bands to the lineup, including T.S.O.L., Shannon and The Clams, Surf Curse and Downtown Boys. Radiohead will be headlining the two Friday concerts and Kendrick Lamar will close the festival out.
This year’s Coachella is massive in scale, growing from humbling beginnings over the past two decades. The original festival was actually a Pearl Jam event held at the Empire Polo Club in 1993. Despite never hosting a large-scale musical performance, the event was a success, returning in 1999 as the “anti-Woodstock” due to its focus on artistry rather than charts.
The festival has since been criticized for taking a commercial turn, but the organizers gave fans quite a few memories over the years, from Roger Waters’ performance of The Wall and Daft Punk’s iconic pyramid in 2006 to the infamous Tupac hologram rapping alongside Snoop Dogg.
If you’re in the area but don’t have a ticket to the festival, consider attending Nochella, a series of after-parties taking place around Indio, Calif.
