Tips / Other

Renting a scooter is a great way to explore a new area independently and for usually a pretty cheap price. But before you rent a scooter, no matter where you are in the world, there are some things you need to consider.

Firstly, it’s important to know if you need an international driver’s license. Some countries require it. Some places require you to have a local license, such as Bali. However, local licenses are relatively easy to obtain, most commonly in a local police station. Many countries don’t require you to have any documentation at all, but insurance is often significantly higher as a result. If you have an international license, you won’t need a local one. So just plan ahead and get an international license here.

It’s important you are renting from a reliable source. In parts of Thailand, as an example, it is not unheard of for people to be given inappropriate or damaged scooters. Not only is this extremely dangerous for the driver, but the renters can often extort you out of money, claiming damages on an already faulty rental.

Be responsible. In many parts of the world where scooter rental is common among tourists, people have a tendency to drink and drive their scooter home. These are also parts of the world where roads are a lot more hectic and unpredictable. Insist you are provided with a helmet and use it.

Take note of the speed limits of the roads you’ll be driving on and stick to them. If the roads are winding and filled with potholes, drive a few miles below the speed limit. If you crash and are lucky enough to survive unscathed, you’re going to face a large bill from your supplier, and possibly the police as well.

Consider these pieces of advice and enjoy the freedom of exploring somewhere beautiful on a scooter. Plan out your day and take to the road independently on your own time. There’s no better way to get a feel for a place than doing it on a scooter.
