Rethink Your Social Media With Beme

The new social media app, Beme, created by Casey Neistat, is aiming to change how you think of social media. Most millennials would agree social media is about putting out a certain image to your followers — it’s creating an image of yourself that you want others to see. In essence, it’s self marketing.

Beme, however, takes that concept and rips it away, delivering a shiny new way of social media — one that has no room for filters, edits or taking dozens of photos until you find the right lighting. It’s sharing four-second clips of raw video with your friends of whatever you’re doing right at this second, whether at a party, posing in the mirror or traveling on the other side of the world. There are no front-facing cameras here, though.

The app only works if your proximity sensor is covered. It seems the original idea was to hold your phone against your chest to record whatever was going on around you, almost as if the viewer were seeing it through your eyes. The videos are posted immediately — you don’t even get a chance to review them before they’re sent out to the Beme universe.

Don’t worry; if it’s embarrassing, it’s not that much of a total disaster, because viewers can only watch other posts once before they disappear from their feed forever. Likes and shares are a thing of the past with this platform. No worries about whether or not you have to delete that Instagram photo because it never hit the correct number of hearts. The only way to react to someone’s posted video is with a selfie, which you take by hitting a little green box in the corner of the screen.

Currently the app is only available on iTunes, with no promises of an Android version anytime soon.
