Reviews / Restaurant

The newly opened Andaz Mayakoba Resort in Mexico’s Riviera Maya region offers four dining options, from casual, locally inspired taco spots to Casa Amate, a unique, upscale restaurant I had the pleasure of trying on my most recent visit.

The distinctive restaurant is designed to offer a residential-like dining experience. From the moment you walk into the restaurant, it feels like you are in the home of a well-traveled friend. I started with an incredible handmade cocktail in the “library,” stocked with books, maps, mementos and comfortable couches. From there we toured the restaurant’s outdoor terrace and other rooms, each modeled after a different room in a home.

Casa Amate offers authentic Latin American cuisine, with each dish inspired by various regions. The room in which we ate was dimly lit for an intimate vibe, and we were surrounded by stocked, wooden bookshelves and sat on plush leather armchairs. From the beginning, we enjoyed great, personalized service.

We sampled Latin America, from empanadas and Peruvian steak to hearty duck and lamb dishes, each boasting unique regionally inspired flavors. While we ate, we enjoyed views of the lagoon below and a quiet, peaceful and cozy atmosphere.

The restaurant’s eclectic design, true at-home dining atmosphere and outstanding food made for a truly memorable dining experience.
