Downtown Olympia, Wash., is compact and walkable, with a handful of shops and restaurants offering a reason to linger. The city’s new 222 Market is an excellent addition to the downtown core.

The Market, a large building that once held a variety of offices, is now a lively food hall with an array of different vendors. Some of them are so exciting as to elevate the Market to a destination for visitors to and residents of the greater Puget Sound area.

Among the highlights are artisans like the Bread Peddler, crowned Washington’s Best French Bakery several times; Blind Pig Spirits craft distillery; Broth Bar by Salt, Fire and Time, an offshoot of Portland, Ore.’s popular broth peddler; Pantry, a sort of grocery store in miniature, selling local and sustainable farm products; and Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar, an innovative restaurant and cocktail bar centered largely around seafood and the namesake farm’s outstanding oysters.

222 Market is a must stop if you’re passing through the area. It’s a great way to sample the spirit and flavors of the Northwest through some of the area’s top purveyors.
