Review: Por Qué No?, Antigua

On the southeast corner of the UNESCO heritage site town of Antigua, Guatemala, you will find a small, tucked-away resto-bar called Por Qué No?, meaning “Why Not?” It’s a cozy little locale owned by the kindest, most warm-hearted couple in Antigua, Carlos and Carolina. Carlos and Carolina have owned this place for nearly five years, and, for such a small bar, it has already amassed a huge following.

With a small bar on the bottom floor and a mezzanine level only accessible by the steepest stairs in Central America (you can grab onto a rope to help you up), you’ll immediately feel at home thanks to the good food, great wine and delightful atmosphere. You can show your appreciation, too, by writing on the wall, and they even provide you with markers to aid you in your guilt-free graffiti.

If you go, get the chicken curry in a burrito; it’s not on the menu, but if you ask politely, you’ll be treated to this special dish only available on the secret menu. If steak is your game, you won’t be disappointed as Carlos, the chef, cooks a mean steak. In fact, he cooks a mean everything, as every dish on the menu is delicious. Carolina, the maître d’, goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome and special, so much so you won’t want to go home.

If you ever end up in Antigua, Guatemala, you must head on over to Por Qué No, and now you certainly don’t have a reason not to do just that.
