Keep these few items in your car to make sure your dog has everything they need to stay safe and enjoy the ride on your next road trip.

You wouldn’t ride in a car without wearing a seatbelt, so why allow your dog? There are simple options, like these seat belt harnesses, that attaches to your dog’s harness or collar to keep them from being thrown from the car or jostled around if you suddenly slam on your breaks or get into an accident. It won’t restrict your dog from sitting or lying down comfortably, but will keep them in place and avoid them roaming around while you’re driving.

If you enjoy taking your canine friends on adventures, you should invest in a back seat cover to protect your car’s interior from paw-shaped prints, mud, water damage, shedding and whatever else your pet may drag in. There are a lot of inexpensive options out there that will still allow you to restrain your dog with a seat belt harness and create a barrier for the front seat. It can also help keep treat crumbs from getting lodged in the seat and all over the floor.

You should always make sure your dog has plenty of water, hard to do if you are in a busy area, or out adventuring between destinations. Pouring water into your hands doesn’t give your pet much to drink and can be difficult to drink for larger dogs. This small water bowl can fit in your back pocket, and comes with an attachment for your water bottle which can help keep you hands-free, a must if you have more than one dog.

You may also want to look into a bag dispenser for your dog’s leash. While packing food, water, treats, toys, car accessories and whatever else your dog may need, the last thing you want to forget to pack for your dog are waste bags. Luckily, there are a number of small dispensers available that clip onto your dog’s leash so that no matter where you are, you’ll never be without a bag.

With these few items in hand, you and your dog will definitely make it to your destination safely. So start planning your trip and don’t forget to let your canine friend tag along. They’re man’s best friends for a reason.
