As cycling becomes more popular, enterprising companies are looking for ways of making bike travel safer in an environment still dominated by cars.

One such company is Lumos, which is behind a new kind of cycling helmet which features built-in lights. Instead of having to remember to pack your lights, Lumos makes your life easier by having them attached to your helmet.

Another added benefit is the fact Lumos acts as an indicator system. While hand signals are the accepted way for cyclists to tell drivers which way they plan to move, some cyclists do not feel safe taking a hand off the bars, or simply forget to do so.

By negating the need for hand signals, Lumos helps cyclists to stay safe. Simply activate the turning lights using the wireless remote which attaches to your handlebars.

Not only does Lumos act as an indicator system, it also features built-in brake lights. The possibility of a rear-end shunt are drastically reduced thanks to a built-in accelerometer which causes red brake lights to illuminate automatically when you slow down.

On the front of the helmet, white lights are arranged in a distinctive pattern in order to make cyclists more visible to car drivers. The fact the lights are mounted on a helmet means they are higher, and more visible, than bike-mounted units.

The system boasts an integrated, rechargeable battery which keeps maintenance simple. It proved a hit with Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/819484536/lumos-a-next-generation-bicycle-helmet/description) backers, who pledged $809,551 to bring the product to market. Overall, Lumos is a convenient safety solution which removes several worries for both novice and experienced cyclists.

Are You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?

Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
