Itching for a European vacation? Looking to get your fix of French culture? Well, strapped-for-cash travelers, you are in luck. No, flights to Paris aren’t anycheaper than they were last time you checked Expedia, but not all hope is lost. Rather than cross an ocean, head to Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

Where? Well, these small islands off the coast of Newfoundland are one of the last overseas holdings of France, making it a tiny piece of EU territory nestled near Canada’s coast. In order to get onto the islands, which can be reached by air or ferry, you have to go through international customs and the currency on the islands is the Euro.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon are dotted with brightly-colored houses, and whales can be seen off the coast. Rolling hills, views of the sea and varied architecture make it a relaxing and fascinating place to visit. Although far from the mainland, the islands also host festivals in coordination with France, including the Fete de la Musique. The annual music festival is a favorite for tourists and locals alike, both in France and on the islands!

Is it like escaping to Paris for a weekend? No. But Saint Pierre and Miquelon offer a unique blend of North American and French culture, making something entirely different from both. At once familiar and foreign, it’s a great place to explore. Plus, you’ll leave with the bragging rights of saying you’ve (technically) just been to France!
