Seattle’s iconic Space Needle is preparing to undergo a massive renovation that will be a multi-year undertaking aimed at giving visitors better views from the observation deck.

Among the changes coming for the 55-year-old icon are floor-to-ceiling glass replacing the current cages around the observation deck. When finished, visitors will have views unobstructed across the city. The SkyCity Restaurant, just below, will see a new, first-ever rotating glass floor that opens up views straight down to the ground.

“I believe we’ll look back at this as a pivotal moment in the history of the Space Needle,” Jeff Wright, chairman, Space Needle LLC, said in a statement. “This project both connects us back to our roots, to the vision that my father and his partners had when they built the Space Needle in 1962, and guides us forward into the future for generations to enjoy.”

The Space Needle will remain partially open during construction as crews work from an elevated platform below the restaurant level. The restaurant will be the only fully closed aspect of the attraction.

The Space Needle was constructed in 1962 for Century 21’s World Fair. This is the landmark’s third and biggest renovation, and its owners hope it will help it achieve the LEED Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
