The holiday shopping season is in full swing. While something generic like a Starbucks gift card or winter sweater would be appreciated, those gifts don’t feel personal or unique. Instead, consider doing your holiday shopping abroad. You are more likely to find a one-of-a-kind item your loved one will cherish.

You can tailor the types of gifts you purchase to your destination. If you’re traveling to China, bring home some local tea or a silk scarf as a gift. For trips to Spain, bring back traditional Spanish pottery. Buy your loved one an Irish wool sweater if your travels bring you to Ireland. Consider unique items that aren’t easily found in the United States. Local snacks like candy, chips, cookies and other novelty items make a great gift. Instead of traditional Christmas cards, send your loved ones postcards from the destination.

Please note: Some items are restricted in the United States. Check the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol website for a full list of prohibited items before you make your purchase.

If you don’t plan to go abroad during the holiday shopping season, consider purchasing an item from overseas online. Ten Thousand Villages sells handmade products from around the world. Or browse a department store like Harrods.

Remember, it’s the thought that counts, so purchase a thoughtful gift over something extravagant.
