Contrary to popular belief, grime is not British hip-hop, even if there is considerable overlap. While rapping is common to both, grime draws upon a number of influences, from reggae sound system culture and the garage-tinged production to the local drum ‘n bass scene. If you need a quick rundown, be sure to check out these classic tracks that define East London.

“I Luv U” by Dizzee Rascal (2003)

Don’t let the DJ Fresh collabs fool you — 2003’s Boy in da Corner is considered a masterpiece in its own right, garnering Dizzee Rascal international success and putting grime music on the map.

“When I’m ‘ere” by Roll Deep (2005)

Some of the best grime tracks are posse cuts. Simple eight bar loops with a bunch of MCs passing the mic around. Roll Deep’s “When I’m ‘ere” is a classic example, a throwback to the genre’s origins on pirate radio.

“Next Hype” by Tempa T (2009)

Tempa is known for his high-energy, aggressive lyrics and “Next Hype” is no exception. The former Slew Dem member achieved legend status with this track, now considered a staple for underground music in England.

“Wot Do U Call It?” by Wiley (2004)

“Eskimo” is considered one of the first tracks called grime, but fans will more likely say this is their favorite Wiley song. Coming off his debut album, the sound laid out a blueprint that would define the genre, earning him the title Godfather of Grime.

“Duppy” by Skepta (2006)

At 2015’s BRIT Awards, Skepta and nearly the entire UK grime scene mobbed with Kanye West during his performance of “All Day,” bringing a new generations of MCs to international attention. Kanye revealed shortly after he was collaborating with Skepta, though no record has turned up so far.

“Punch In The Face” by Jme (2008)

Jme is serious, but he also packs a lot of humor and double entendre into his raps. The man is also a prolific producer, going from cell phone ringtones to starting the record label Boy Better Know with Skepta (his brother).
