Tips / Other

For the American raver, hardcore is one of those genres with a small, but extremely dedicated fan base. It’s also highly influential as one of the original genres of club music, born out of the industrial scene and reimagined by dozens of its splintering subgenres. If you’re planning on going to Defqon, be sure to have these tracks for your pregame.

“Alles Naar de Klote” by Euromasters (1992)

This Euromasters hit helped solidify modern gabber’s classic sound with its hard, distorted kick drum.

“N.Y.C. Speedcore” by D.O.A. (1996)

Disciples of Annihilation helped develop New York’s early hardcore scene, coining the style speedcore for the 200-plus tempo.

“Criminally Insane” by Angerfist (2002)

Several post-2000 hardcore artists introduce the genre to new audiences, the most notable of which is Angerfist. The Dutch artist is known for his menacing ski mask and intense DJ sets that span from hardcore into speedcore.

“Army of Hardcore” by Neophyte vs. The Stunned Guys (1998)

“Army of Hardcore” might be overplayed for gabber/hardcore veterans, but it’s a classic for people who need a primer on the genre.

“Tonight” by Headhunterz & Wildstylez vs. Noisecointrollers (2012)

Three of the most influential producers in hardstyle produced this single track. The genre is a variant of gabber heavy on melody and uplifting sounds.

“We Have Arrived” by Mescalinum United (1991)

Mescalinum United is credited with producing the first hardcore techno track, a techno offshoot that would develop into hardcore as we hear it now.
