Ski and snowboard season is upon us. According to a recent holiday and winter travel survey by Vacasa, conducted with Allison + Partners Research, 61 percent of respondents said they’re planning a ski or snowboard trip this winter. Vacasa, the nation’s leading vacation rental management platform, and more than 100 other booking platforms also experienced a 50 percent increase in Tahoe area reservations after reports of snowfall, showing demand for ski season is stronger than ever.
Splurge-Worthy Getaways
Whistler, British Columbia
Located on the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, just two hours north of Vancouver, this legendary destination is an international mountain sports destination and luxe mountain town. Two side-by-side mountains, connected by the world record-breaking PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, offers complete access to Whistler’s Blackcomb’s renowned alpine terrain. The town hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, so visitors can shred the same runs as the pros.
Big Sky, Montana
Situated in the Rocky Mountains of southern Montana, Big Sky is known for its top-notch skiing and downhill mountain bike trails. The biggest skiing in America means one lift ticket gives visitors access to Big Sky’s 5,800 acres of skiable terrain and 4,350 feet of vertical, spanning four mountains.
Park City, Utah
Park City Mountain stakes its claim as the largest U.S. ski resort, with more than 7,300 acres of skiable terrain. The destination hosted many major ski and snowboard events, including the 2002 Winter Olympics. Travelers can pick between Park City Mountain or Deer Valley Resort. Deer Valley Resort caters to the skier-only crowd, so snowboarders aren’t allowed.
Budget-Friendly Getaways
Breckenridge, Colorado
This small mountain town sits in the heart of the Rockies and currently boasts five peaks, 187 trails, the tallest chairlift in North America and more. This destination is recognized as one of the best ski resorts in Colorado and offers great powder, beautiful skies and a quaint Main Street to cruise after a day on the slopes.
Sugar Mountain, North Carolina
Sugar Mountain is a go-to spot for great skiing at an affordable price. The mountain provides the most skiable terrain and largest vertical drop in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. The resort features 125 acres across 21 slopes with eight lifts for rapid transport.
Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Located in northwest Colorado, Steamboat Springs is home to the Howelsen Hill ski area and the Steamboat Ski Resort, featuring 18 lifts and 169 trails across six mountain peaks. The destination prides itself on being an affordable, premier destination in the country. The Steamboat experience and surrounding mountains will soon be elevated after its $135 million renovation.
